Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35
Cathy’s grandfather Coulthurst was a typical British man born in Manchester, England in 1868. He came over to this country in his late teens and settled in San Diego. He was very punctual and very proper. For example, he would be offended if after a very bountiful dinner someone would say, “I am stuffed!” Rather, he would say, “I have had a sufficiency! Any more would be a superfluity!” I laugh at that remark, but there is something very fulfilling about it as well.
I would have us consider the next time we have the Sacrament of Communion, that we consider the comment Grandpa Coulthurst made. Spiritual fulfillment from Him who is the Bread of Life would satiate everyone’s spiritual appetite. Also in John 6, Jesus fed 5000 and satisfied their physical hunger. Jesus was hoping they would find a deeper hunger satisfaction in the Bread of Life. So may we find sufficiency in the Bread of Life! There would be no superfluity, either!
Prayer: Eternal Bread of Life, feed us this day with our daily bread needs, but satisfy us with the Bread that does not spoil but has eternal sufficiency for our lives every day. Amen.
